Week Two: May 14th thru May 19th

                                                  Monday started out very rainy.
No progress on site was made. It was raining so hard, both the ponds were put to use, we had over 2 1/4 inches of water by 6:30am. We learned that one of the skimmers in the pond was not working. It stopped raining by noon, but we are in for more storms tonight and throughout tomorrow.

Every Monday at 7:00am is a Safety Meeting on site, but it was raining so hard, we had the Safety meeting in the Superintendent trailer today. During the safety meeting we talked about Fires and Fire Extinguishers. Everyone who is going to be on site for the day has to attend the Safety meeting as well as everyone in the office.

Also every Monday we have a Staff Meeting at 10:30 am. We got a new PE so SHE introduced herself (Emily) 3rd girl on this project. Someone commented that the girls are going to out number the boys soon.

                                 Anyways at the staff meeting:
  •  The Safety Guy read a page of the Site Specific Safety Plan, which talked about the contractors/subcontractors responsibilities.
  • Then EVERYONE (including me and the secretary) gave an update on what they are doing and what is going on.
  • We talked about how every week we have to do a Safety Audit of the site and 1 office person and 1 field person have to do it, the schedule will be posted with the new people included.
  • We talked about how there is a Sister Hospital to the one we are building in Cherry that is 18months ahead of us and how they are a great example of what not to do.
  • All the staff that is not 30hr OSHA certified, CPR certified, or Crane Certified needs to get certified. Safety Guy will email everyone about when the training sessions will be.
  • We also talked about how we have to stay on top of the schedule. We have a state mandated schedule consultant because of what the sister hospital is going through and we want to phase him out, so everyone has to stay on top of the schedule and know start dates and the phasing because we will all be asked and we have to have the same answers
DRUM ROLL PLEASE... THE MOST EXCITING NEWS OF THE DAY:
I LEARNED HOW TO OPERATE A FORK LIFT!! That was honestly so much fun and not hard at all.I will be certified after one more time out on it!! Roy said that he will also teach me how to drive a few of the other machines! :) I can't wait.

While walking to and from fork lift training I was talking with one of the Superintendent's Glen and I told him I would love to be a superintendent, so he told Matt (PM) and Matt said after I finish updating the Drawings, I will help with reviewing the submittals then I will be able to go out on site with the superintendents and make sure the subs have everything they have to on site!!! I AM EXCITED! They already have new tasks lined up for me and they said they will get me out on site as much as possible!

It did not end up raining on Tuesday.
The Site sub came out and fixed the skimmer in the pond and removed some tree stumps. They couldn't push any dirt around because the ground was still soggy as all get out because it rained Monday night, about an inch.

Although I was STILL updating the drawings, we had a few people visit site today. We had the Regional Safety Guy and The Civil Engineer.

Good News by the end of the day tomorrow I should have the drawings ALL UPDATED. I can't wait.
I got a phone call from Jeremy the Charlotte Office Regional Manager! He is the one who offered me the position at the Broughton Hospital. He called to check in on me and he wants to make sure they are giving me responsibility and if not I need to demand it. He also wants me to plan on visiting a couple of the other Archer Western projects. I have plans to visit the Cherry Hospital and also the project at the Airport!!!

Wednesday was busy busy in terms of meetings.
We had the OAS meeting with the Owner, Architect, and State people, which is a monthly meeting. Then I also got to be apart of the Coordination of Enclosure Meeting with Subs, Architects Supers, PE's, and PM's. This meeting was the Kickoff meeting. Trying to get everyone coordinated and knowing what they need to be doing.
I never knew that so much coordination between the subs had to go on. They even have to coordinate drawings and label who is taking care of what aspect and the phasing!!
During the Meeting I learned that on this project we are using Rainscreen Walls which is becoming more popular.
Paul (Superintendent) took me out on site today and showed me where some of the Site Utilities were that still needed to be removed and where the Unsuitable Soil was being kept!

Thursday we got some new machinery on site.
Paul took me out on site and we watched the BIN GRINDER:

This machine is huge! It holds 800 gallons of fuel and can run about 3days on it. Hunter was using this machine to grind up some of the trees that were removed and make it into Mulch. The Mulch will be used later on the project for landscaping. The Mulch will be stocked piled in the same area as the Unsuitable Soil.
Also today I was involved in the Submittal Meeting with the PE's, Travis (Super), and Matt (PM). At this meeting we talked about what Submittals were missing, who we needed to call, what we needed to review, and what was upcoming on our submittal log.
It was a very long meeting, but very Productive!!
At Lunch today, EVERYONE went to lunch together!! I love that a team this big, who has never met each other, can come together and get a project this big going and still get along!!!

                                                  Friday Friday Friday
Today I spent most of the day Updating drawings to the Halfsets!! But I also started my work on Submittals. We got a 150page Submittal from our Roofing guy. I get the lucky task of sorting through the pages and Making sure what was submitted matches the Specs! FUUUN!! :) Let's just say I will be working on this task for awhile.
Roy (MY FAV) took me out to site today and we had to take Progress Photos of the Silt Fence in the Ponds that were installed today.
We also watched the bin grinder some more. Roy also pointed some of the trees that they want to keep according to the Arborist! Apparently when you are on a site with lots of trees you have to have an Arborist to tell you which trees can go or stay.
Also today I got named: Little Super/Mini Sup!! The Superintendents claimed me as one of their own and want me to stay working with them!! Prolly because I helped all of them with adding the Broughton Hospital Subcontractor Contact List to their Outlook Email.

Weekly Reflection: This week was really exciting: I got to attend a lot of meetings and that helped me feel more like part of the team, I got to start working with submittals(not fun),
    This week I learned:
  •   We have a Mock-Up for this project that every aspect of the project has to be approved first through the Mock-Up before they can install/build it on site, the mock-up will be 12'x20'
  • Subcontractors will really try and low bid others, openly, blatantly. (I'm very proud to say that my superintendents refused to play their games and told them they will call them when they have all the bids in! Go Archer Western)
  • Although we are trying to give subcontractors work, we still have to schmooze them!! Relationships are so important, no matter how unreasonable or ridiculous the subs are in their requests, we still have to do all we can to have a great working relationship with them
  • Knowing your place and your role is so important. When the safety guy or a supervisor sticks their nose where it doesn't belong, all hell breaks lose. Stick to your duties/roles in the job, don't step on others toes, and trust that the others will do what they say they are going to do, and stay within the chain of command. You go outside the chain, attitudes will get testy
  • Architects say they just want to help you and will be there for the subs to answer questions, but "ONLY ON MY SCHEDULE" (Contradictory much?)
  • And I know you are all worried because it has been raining so much: But have no fear, Weather Impacted Days for each month are put in to the schedule baded on averages for the area
