Monday:
Had our weekly Safety Meeting today about Steel Erection, then our MSDS talk was about Concrete since we should start pouring our concrete next week for at least the Site Walls and Mock Up.
We had our 1st Pre Con Meeting today with the Subs and Architect, this one was the Foundation Pre Con. During the meeting we discussed with the Subs Safety, the Schedule, Daily Reports, Temp Utilities, Work days and hours. While we were talking about the schedule, the Architects and Engineers who were video conferencing with us told us they would only be on site two days a week to inspect rebar and such. Well let me just tell you how mad that made our Supers and PM's! Our senior PM said that we aren't just going to pour two days a week, we are going to pour everyday we can because we never know what they weather is going to do and we can't impact the schedule like that. The Engineer who is doing the inspections did not like that so much!!!! It was awesome to see my PM stand up for this project and the schedule!!
I also called Subs that didn't attend the Ext Skin Enclosure Meeting last week to make sure they received and looked over the meeting minutes as well as make sure they have their coordination drawings turned in to Share Point by Monday June 11th.
Everyone is running out of stuff for me to do, they said they will have more work on site for me to do next week when they start laying pipe and start the Mock Up and Site Walls!!
After I got my phone calls made I spent the rest of the day on site with Roy!! Hunter is making great progress cutting and filling the site!!
Tuesday:
I spent the day at Cherry Hospital! Talk about a long day. 8hour round trip. While at Cherry Dan (Superintendent our that job now, but he is coming to our site in August) gave us, the subs, and the Architects a tour.
We saw the Mock Up which still isn't approved and done (they are supposed to close out in November EEKK)
We walked around and Dan explained some of the problems and issues they are having on their site and explaining to the subs what to avoid and to do so we don't have the same issues.
Dan expressed to the Subs the importance of getting their Submittals in as soon as possible because they still don't have submittals approved for their site like the Caulk and some Windows, so they have places that they have big whole and gaps because they dont' have things approved.
It was a great experience to go see Cherry, it gave us a great idea of how massive our project is, our project is 60,000 more SF then Cherry!!
While we were touring the site the Architect that designed our project and the architect that designed Cherry's project were both with us. It was funny to have both of them their because when Dan would say oh ya make sure when you are doing such and such you watch out for this and our architect would be like oh don't worry about that, that's not on our project. Our architect seemed to get under the Cherry's project architect!! hahaha, it's only funny because they are from the same company!
Wednesday:
Today I got to spend the day in Charlotte for Crane Safety Awareness!
I found out that Walsh owns the most Cranes of any Construction Company in the US! (270 Cranes)
Crane Safety was a great class, we learned a lot about what not to do as well as safe procedures and things to make sure are done while cranes are on site.
I even got to learn how to calculate loads!! It wasn't that hard at all, as long as you are reading the right charts all is well.
Thursday:
I thought since I was gone for two days I would have tons of work to catch up on when I got back to the Office, but that was not true at all.
While I was gone tho apparently one of our PM's gave the removing of the asphalt to Lackey, but Hunter had been removing the asphalt thus far, but they only removed what was in their way of working. Lackey started removing whatever asphalt they saw, and they were tearing up our site. They tore up stuff that didn't need to be torn out till NEXT YEAR!! oh the drama they caused. Our Rebar came in today and Lackey was in the way of where they needed to unload the Rebar. Let's just say today was Lackey's last day of removing asphalt, we gave it back to Hunter rightfully so! We can't have a problem with our subs already! We need them to help finish the job and our Supers stressed that point to our PM's our Senior PM agreed fully with them.
Today I got to go on adventure with Paul and find existing Man holes that Piedmont has to tie in to when they start working on site next week! It was a blast, we had to search and find, some of the Man Holes were buried within weeds and brush.
Testing Lab trailer for Concrete came in today!!!
We had our weekly Submittal meeting! We discussed where everyone was. I have been having trouble getting responses back from subs, so they said if I don't hear back from subs next week that we will have our PM contact their boss!!
Friday:
My PM gave me access to Primavera so I can help update the schedule! This was an exciting task! I felt special that I had access to our schedule and kind of pressured because I didn't want to make any mistakes. Primavera is set up just like SureTrak tho, so that made it easy to work with.
I also called subs about having their coordination drawings uploaded to Share Point for the Ext Skin Enclosure coordination!
We had our Staff Meeting today! It was a really good staff meeting! We talked about the Matthew Walsh Safety Award that is awarded to the project who submits the best portfolio of how they are going to go above and beyond our safety guidelines for their project.
We talked about our schedule Review and when we want to start the Mock Up and Site Walls!
We also talked about how the schedule is our Life Line: we have to always know what the next 90 days looks like. We need to be ahead of schedule always.
DRUM ROLL PLEASE:
FRIDAY ended up being THE BEST DAY EVER BECAUSE...
I GOT MY COMPANY IPAD!!
It's exciting because not only do I have my own personal IPAD, but now I feel like a cool kid with everyone else! I can check the drawings and specs and any project documents quickly on the IPAD! I had to download GoodReader!! it's an awesome app that keeps us all linked in with Freelon(the architects) on any updated drawings or RFI's
Weekly Reflection:
Another week come and gone! I thought it was a crazy week because I was out of the Office two days this week, but I was still very productive and I am excited for Next week with the laying of pipe and the Mock Up!!
What I learned:
- Always ask questions at the right time! Make sure you aren't asking questions when someone is not happy with the way things are going right now
- We shot ourselves in the foot by having Lackey remove the asphalt, we will lose money on that now
- Just because someone works for the same company (Freelon) doesn't mean they do things the same way
- The A/E's don't like when you assume it will be approved for the Broughton Project just because it was Approved for Cherry
- Just because I am an intern does not mean I have to get the crappy not worth anything tasks!
- If you bake Construction Workers goodies they will love you forever!!!!
